Increasing Regional Competitiveness by Integrating Supply Chains

Marcus Williams of Automobile Logistics reports that Canada’s Ontario province and the State of Michigan have signed a pact to improve the integration of automotive supply chains. The auto manufacturing sector is the long standing driver of economic prosperity in both regions and they are reimagining the role of the auto sector in their regions through collaboration on the new innovations that are driving the future of connected and automated vehicles (autonomous mobility and safety).

Multiple parties in the auto supply chain are already at work developing autonomous-driving technologies, and the trend toward putting autonomous vehicles on the road is rapidly gaining momentum across a broad front that encompasses OEMs, suppliers, mobility providers, technology companies, academic institutions, governments, and regulatory bodies. At international auto and consumer technology shows, increasing numbers of automakers and technology companies are showing off their visions, and the number of players working on autonomous driving is rising rapidly.

Ontario and Michigan are working together to compete with other regions that currently have a large automotive presence including the Southeast U.S. and Mexico. Rather than continuing to allow disruptive forces in the global auto industry pose challenges within each region to make them less competitive, these regions see the value in working together to increase the competitiveness of the entire multinational region—all based on the new technologies shaping the auto industry. Ontario and the State of Michigan are raising the bar for innovative economic development programs through collaboration and cooperation.

GLDPartners believes that the key for next-gen economic development is having access to meaningful sector intelligence and using that intelligence to increase the competitiveness of a region and to grow and expand the local and regional economies.
