Anchorage International Airport ( ANC) is pursuing an entire air cargo community approach to IATA’s CEIV Pharma program by sponsoring members of their air cargo community (airlines, handlers, and freight forwarders) to undergo the extensive training program required to gain certification. The CEIV pharma certification program ensures the participants in the air cargo value chain have the tools to operate at the highest standards for the transport of what in many cases are lifesaving drugs and medicines

Why ANC and why now?  As a major freight hub for goods flowing into and out of Asia and North America, ANC is a natural choice because of its vast global connections and the amount of pharmaceutical products that are moving through.   Approximately 75% of all air cargo shipped between Asia and the US currently passes through the airport as it has proved to be an ideal technical stop location and consequently air cargo carriers and express operators have developed transhipment operations from the airport.

To meet the growing interest in Alaska’s strategic global location,  ANC in conjunction with a public/private sector consortium has created the AeroNexus Alliance which is designed to support global companies that manage complex supply chain requirements in the busy North American/Asia trade lanes.  Currently the Alliance in creating a purpose built business proposition for companies that deal in the clinical trial supply logistics market.

As clinical trials continue to grow in complexity and scope, this proposition can offer companies a robust risk management solution by offering a comprehensive logistics and land asset product to serve the busy North America/Asia trade lanes for the collection and transport of clinical trial material and investigational medicinal products to clinical trial sites as well as the shipment of biological samples from these sites to central laboratories.

The rapid deployment of clinical trial supplies requires a shortened supply chain.  A one-size-fits all approach to the clinical trial supply chain needs to evolve.  An Anchorage location can offer a supply chain built around flexibility, responsiveness and reliability and may well be a competitive advantage for companies.
